While devout followers were engaged in prayer, threat actors were preying, as the Lutheran Church in Finland found itself under attack, from A group of malicious cyber actors, targeting the religious body.

As reported by the STT news agency on Sunday, 14th January 2024, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) fell victim to a cyber breach earlier in the month. A series of Screenshots revealing sensitive information about its members were maliciously made public. This information reportedly included passport data pages of the organisation’s members.

Responding to the incident by LWF representative:

In response to the situation, an LWF representative, in an email exchange with STT, confirmed their awareness of the breach and the subsequent extortion attempts. However, the representative chose not to elaborate on the extent of the breach’s impact.

This incident raises significant concerns, considering that a large portion of the organisations members could potentially have their sensitive information exposed. The Lutheran church which was founded in the 15th century, has over 65% of the Finnish population as active believers and members of the protestant movement.

Undoubtedly, this incident which targeted the Lutheran church in Finland, serves as a stark reminder of the ever increase in threat, and cybercrime, even for religious institutions.
